A Writerly Update 38.

Hi Everyone,

I did it!
On Monday I completed the Romance Writers of Australia 50k in 30 day challenge. It was really tough! I had slipped behind and had to catch up, which made it so much harder than it should have been. But I know I can do it now, and if I stick to writing 1,667 words a day, which is doable, I can write 50k every month, which would be awesome. Except I do have to edit my WIPs so I can actually start submitting to agents.

Since I just wrote 50k in one month I’ve been taking it easy this week. I didn’t write at all on Tuesday, and I didn’t feel the need to. I think my brain needed a rest after multiple 4k and 5k word days in a row.

If you recall, I told you I wrote a short story a while ago that I thought was my best yet. I submitted it to an anthology and I was asked if they could hold onto it for a second read. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit in with the anthology which is what I was afraid would happen. Though the editor did say she thought it was a really strong piece. So on Wednesday I had a quick look over it and then sent it to a magazine that specialises in the types of story that I wrote, so I’m hoping they will think it is strong too and give me a yes.

On Thursday/Friday I edited a piece of flash fiction and sent it into a local writing competition. Yesterday I wrote a bit more of my urban fantasy, and today I wrote a bit more of my middle grade.

Now I have to get back into the routine I developed while doing the 50k challenge. (though it’s going to be hard since it is school holidays. Why is it that kids will happily ignore you while you are doing housework, but if you are on the computer they suddenly want all of your attention?) I also need to get back into editing my WIPs. I actually really missed editing while I was doing the challenge.

That’s all from me. How was your writing week? I would love to hear from you 🙂

  1. A week of ups and downs, but I hope more ups in your opinion 🙂 It’s always a struggle to balance writing new material and revise old. When you miss editing, you know your a writer 🙂 Good on you. Break a pencil with that story.

    1. Thanks. The rejection wasn’t too hard to take because it was a really nice rejection 🙂 I was happy with the week, it was nice to take it slow since the two weeks before that were crazy with the challenge, and I always feel good when I send stories away.
