Open Submissions.

Welcome to my open submissions page. Here I’ll post places open for submission that I hear about. They will mainly be for short story comps, anthologies and magazines, mostly in the speculative genre.

Submissions without a fixed closing date (on going):

1) Love Flash Fiction?

AntipodeanSF is looking for 500 word speculative flash fiction pieces both from Australia and anywhere else in the world. Open to submissions all the time. Check out the guidelines here

2) Fiction Vortex

Currently accepting submissions all the time. They want Speculative fiction stories (sci-fi, fantasy, horror, supernatural, alternate history, alternate realities, etc.) up to 7,500 words but perfer under 5,000. They pay $3 per story, but the best stories of the month win 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes of $30, $20 and $10 (US) respectively.

3) Writing Tomorrow.

They publish both emerging and established writers in print and digital media. They accept previously unpublished fiction (up to 12,000 words), poetry, creative nonfiction, novel excerpts, and artwork. They offer $50-100 for fiction/nonfiction and artwork. The rates for poetry and flash fiction begin at $25.

4) DarkFuse.

DarkFuse is now accepting original micro-fiction (flash fiction) for its website Horror d’oeuvres ( and it’s anthology series published under the same name. Before submitting, please make sure your work fits ALL of the following criteria:

Manuscript must be between 99 and 999 words.
Story is dark fiction (dark element to the plot). Thriller, horror, suspense, crime, bizarre.
Fiction is original, never before published in any form
Manuscript is not submitted (or will be submitted) elsewhere during our review process
No multiple submissions in each category (only one flash fiction story at a time)

All authors will receive 5 cents per word payable on initial publication, plus 1 free copy of all print editions their work appears in. In addition, authors will get a complimentary lifetime subscription to the Horror d’oeuvres site.

5) Tincture Journal. (International)

It says submissions are now open for issue three, but links to guidelines for issue four. No closing date is offered.

Tincture Journal is seeking fresh new short stories for Issue Four (December). You will be published in their e-book, including a short bio.
Stories may be anything from 100 to 20,000 words.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted, just let them know.
All submissions should be in Word or Open Office formats, 12 point font, double spaced. Please provide a bio.
Published writers will be paid. (Usually $20-$50.)
They ask that you purchase a prior issue of the journal to support your fellow writers and get a feeling for what they have published previously:

6)Bloomsbury Spark – International
Digital imprint of Bloomsbury.
Seeking teen, YA, NA submissions 25-60k words long.

7) Aghast – International.

Aghast is a bi-annual journal of horror and dark fantasy fiction. It will be available in print and digital formats.

The first issue is scheduled for publication in September 2014.

What they want:

Aghast is looking for original, unpublished horror and dark fantasy short stories and longer works of fiction. We prefer supernatural and weird tales . We’re unlikely to publish stories featuring serial killers, werewolves, vampires or zombies. Science fiction is okay if it’s dark.
Short Fiction: 1500-7000 words. 5000 words or less is the sweet spot.
Flash Fiction: 250-1000 words.
Novellas/Novelettes: 10k-30k words.

Payment is 1 cent/word.

8) Crazy Horse – International.

Crazyhorse welcomes general submissions of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry from September 1st through May 31st, with the exception of the month of January, during which we only accept entries for the Crazyhorse Prizes.

They ask that submissions of fiction and nonfiction be somewhere between 2,500 and 8,500 words in length. For poetry, please submit a set of 3-5 poems.

Payment for accepted work: $20 per page of layout with a maximum $200 payment.
